GATE study Plan for Electrical Engineering(EE)

First and foremost thing is Strictly follow the GATE syllabus, the respective subjects books have a lot of topics in each subject and chapters that are not present in the GATE examination. So you may end up wasting a lot of your valuable  time specially 2-3 months before the GATE Exam, if you are not going according to the GATE syllabus. Always try to avoid things not there in  the GATE syllabus.

Read only the chosen books which you gone through your class days and you may avoid reading many different books.

Prepare a good time-table plan taking into considerations like important subjects, easy and difficult topics, your core strengths and improvement areas.

It is only going to be you who have to study either today or on a later date. So, don’t postponed any topics or subjects while coming to finishing a topic.

After collecting the syllabus for the exam, you must identify the suitable textbooks for preparation. Please remember only good text books with strong basic concepts will be helpful. Collect the previous question papers and prepare a timetable based on the weightage and priority of subjects in the exam. 

Identify the subjects which will have more importance in the exam and prepare such subjects in all means i.e., definitions, theory, problems, etc.

After completion of each chapter in the subject, please go through the previous GATE question papers and solve the questions related to that chapter. This will improve your confidence which is one of the essential things for success. 

To obtain a good percentile or score in GATE examination, you should have a better knowledge in tough subjects like Electrical Machines, Power system etc. A few subjects may be easy for most of you and questions in such subjects may be answered by more number of students. But the score can be improved if we you can solve the problems in tough subjects.

From this analysis, you can now estimate that what is being more frequent in GATE for Electrical engineering exam. Also, this will help you to what you can avoid as well so that better time utilization can be done. You can’t avoid subjects like General aptitude, Communication Theory , Electronic devices & circuits & Network theory but you can do or leave any other subject in which you think you are not that much handy according to your wish and capacity.

Study Plan for “Electrical Machines”

In EE, Electrical machines are one of the most important subjects, which must be considered for obtaining good score. You should have good understanding and deep knowledge of transformers, DC machines,  Induction motors, synchronous machines, etc., and must solve more number of problems. More number of problems will be there in this subject and by solving them with confidence, will surely give a great success. This subject is divided into four topics i.e, Transformers, Induction Machines, Synchronous Machines and DC Machines.  Start this subject by transformers followed by Induction machines as the only difference between them being static and rotating and both are somewhat easy to understand. There are many similarities between these two. DC machines are also simple understand, hence start with this topic followed by synchronous machines .

Study Plan for “Power System”

Power system is a very interesting and an important subject of EE. It is a vast syllabus subject. So you have to plan strategically for completing the syllabus.
Prepare power system according to following sequence-

  1. Symmetrical & Unsymmetrical Fault analysis.
  2. Power system stability.
  3. Voltage improvement tech.
  4. Load flow studies
  5. Power system protection 

 Rest all are small topics, such as corona ,SIL ,transmission lines performance, inductance capacitance, lightening surges and generation concepts.

The standard textbooks can be used for basic concepts and problems which include-

                (1)  Electrical Power Systems, C. L. Wadhwa
                (2)  Modern Power System Analysis, D. P. Kothari, I. J. Nagrath

Note: Time management is an important factor in GATE preparation but please don’t compromise with preparation of Power System & Electrical Machine.

Study Plan for “Circuit Theory”

Electric Circuits and Fields is another subject which requires maximum concentration and will have more weightage in the exam. It mainly deals with network theorems, nodal and mesh analysis, Laplace transforms, 2 port networks, steady state analysis, etc. It is another subject with more number of problems in each topic. One should practice more number of problems from the standard textbooks and previous GATE papers for success.

This book contains lots of numerical problems  on each topic with solutions to each problems, You can clearly understand different techniques used to solve different  types of problems. Once you practice the numerical examples given in the book on each topic, you will be able to solve all the questions.

Preparation Plan for “Control Systems”

Control Systems is another important subject that finds more priority in GATE examination. It is an easy subject and it is also a marks scoring subject.Looking at the previous GATE exam papers, most of the questions that are asked in control system subject are of numerical type. So practicing the sample numerical questions in each topic is the best way to score full marks in this subject.  It may carry  8-10 marks in GATE and if prepared well, you can score full in this topic.  This subject can be easily completed with self-study.

 (1) Control Systems Engineering, I. J. Nagrath and M. Gopal

(2) Automatic Control Systems, B. C. Kuo and G. Farid

Study Plan for “Engineering Mathematics”

Engineering Mathematics plays important role when you are in top (let’s say 1000) candidates. at that time one question right or wrong makes difference of 1 or 2 marks, and this leads to significant difference in GATE score & Ranking. So the moral is that prepare maths very well. Make a revision (short) notes for every topic which cover all important points and formulas while practicing the problems.

Practice the previous GATE problems after every topic completion.

Reference Book: Higher Engineering Mathematics, Author’s Name: B. S. Grewal

This book has enough concepts for GATE examination, so follow the book according to GATE syllabus and keep an eye on those topics which are not in syllabus.Examples and exercise problems are covered in this book to practice the questions

 

Study Plan for “Measurements”

Reference Book: A Course in Electrical And Electronic Measurements And Instrumentation, Author: A K Sawhney

This is the best book for preparing the measurements and it covers each and every topic of the subject followed by number of numerical examples.This book being very vast, you may prepare notes first according to the topics to be studied.Practice the questions given at the end of each topic. First, solve the sample example questions given in the text book and then solve the previous GATE questions on this subject.

Study Plan for “Field Theory”

Field theory is a slightly difficult subject. Most people jump directly into GATE syllabus. But fundamental understanding of electromagnetic theory is very important to square the concepts needed for GATE examination. So  conceptually strong in electromagnetic theory should be your main target.

For preparation of Field theory go through the basic concepts from Sadiku. Practice questions from Schaum series.

Study Plan for “Power Electronics”

Power electronics generally deal with the control and conversion of electric power.It is the application of solid state electronics.
The basic for power electronics is electronic devices- power diodes, transistors, thyristors, triacs, GTOs, MOSFETs and IGBTs. It is important to know the characteristcs and operation of these devices. If you know this, operations of rectifier, bridge converter, chopper, inverter etc will be quite easy.

Study Plan for “Analog & Digital Electronics”

Out of all the subjects, the above mentioned subjects will require more attention and you can gain good score if he/she is able to the solve the questions in these subjects in addition to the remaining subjects.
The textbooks which are helpful are mentioned below:

  • Digital Electronics And Microprocessor R.P.Jain.
  • Digtal Electronic Moris Mano
  • Microprocessor Architecture, Programming and Applications with the 8085, Ramesh Goankar

 

Revision of Subjects 

Finally, every GATE aspirant should remember that “More the number of questions you practice, the more the confidence you get. More the confidence you get and more you perform in the examination”.
